Families usually want a number. The honest answer is that costs vary a great deal between providers and choices, and no reliable public survey reports average funeral prices specifically for Melbourne. What we can do is show national benchmarks and break a funeral into its parts so you can build your own estimate and compare real price lists.
National benchmarks
The National Funeral Directors Association’s 2023 General Price List Study reported these national median prices for funeral home charges:
- Funeral with viewing and burial: $8,300 (or $9,995 including a vault)
- Funeral with viewing and cremation: $6,280
Cemetery charges such as the plot, opening and closing, and a headstone are not included and can add thousands of dollars.

- Burial vs cremation. Burial adds casket, vault and cemetery charges.
- Merchandise. The casket is often the largest single choice.
- Cemetery. Plot prices differ widely between cemeteries. Veterans can use a national cemetery at no cost for the grave.
- Services. Each viewing or ceremony adds facility and staff charges.
