Green Burial in Florida: How It Works

Green burial, also called natural burial, returns the body to the earth as simply as possible: no embalming, a biodegradable casket or shroud, and usually no concrete vault. Interest in it is growing among Florida families.

How long does a body take to decompose in a green burial?

There is no single answer. Decomposition depends on soil type, moisture, temperature, depth of burial, and the body itself. Without embalming or a sealed vault, natural decomposition proceeds much faster than in a conventional burial, and warm, moist conditions such as Florida’s generally speed it up. Soft tissue typically breaks down over months to a few years; bones can last far longer. Green cemeteries plan their grounds with this in mind.

What makes a burial “green”

• No embalming, or only non-toxic methods; refrigeration is used to preserve the body before burial
• A shroud or casket made of untreated wood, wicker, cardboard or other biodegradable material
• No vault or grave liner, or one open at the bottom
• Often, natural markers such as native plants or flat stones, and land managed as a nature preserve

Is green burial legal in Florida?

Yes, in a cemetery that permits it. Florida law does not require embalming (a body held more than 24 hours must be refrigerated or embalmed; Fla. Stat. 497.386), and vault requirements are set by cemeteries rather than state law. The key step is finding a cemetery that offers green burial.

Florida has a small number of dedicated natural burial grounds and conventional cemeteries with green sections. Ask local cemeteries whether they offer green burial, and ask your funeral home whether it has handled green burials and can provide refrigeration and a suitable container.
