Choosing an urn size
- Adult urns commonly hold around 200 cubic inches, which suits most adults up to about 200 pounds.
- Large urns are made for people who weighed more, or when you want extra room.
- Companion urns hold the remains of two people, commonly spouses.
- Keepsake urns hold a small portion, so several family members can each keep some, or for use alongside scattering.
- Niches and burial: if the urn will go in a columbarium niche or an urn vault, check the niche or vault’s interior dimensions before you buy.
Cremated remains are mostly bone fragments processed to a uniform consistency. Their volume relates more to bone size and density than to body weight, which is why any weight-based figure is only an estimate.
Where to get an urn
Funeral homes sell urns and can confirm sizing for you. Under the FTC Funeral Rule you can also buy an urn elsewhere, and the funeral home may not charge a fee for using it.
